Cara Houghton
Flute Specialist
Cara is a flautist based between London and Manchester, known for her passion for spreading joy through music as an experienced player, teacher, and advocate for inclusivity. She completed her Postgraduate degree at the Royal College of Music in 2023, following her Undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2020. During her time at the RNCM, she served as Student Union President and later chaired the Conservatoires UK Student Network, shaping her deep understanding of music education and the student learning experience.

She enjoys playing a broad range of music, but has a particular interest in commissioning and performing contemporary music written for flute within various ensembles, which resulted in her being selected as a London Sinfonietta Academy musician in 2023. She is also interested in introducing exciting new (or previously overlooked) repertoire to audiences, students and colleagues, which is propelled by her work in Ormonde Editions. In 2022, she won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Writer’s Prize for her article on Ina Boyle’s ‘Glencree’, a piece she first heard due to her research into lesser-known composers.

Alongside her performance and teaching work, Cara is committed to the intersection of music and wellbeing. Driven by her interest in embodied learning, she is set to launch her project, Happy Practice, in Winter 2026, which will focus on integrating enhanced awareness and wellbeing into music practice sessions. She is currently a trainee at the London Centre for Alexander Technique and Training.
A passionate educator, Cara previously taught and coached ensembles at Junior RNCM and London Youth Conservatoire, and now runs her own KS3 Woodwind and Brass Ensemble with Camden Music Service. When working with Chameleon she particularly enjoys her visits to SEND schools and bouncing off the students’ creativity to create magical musical experiences!
